BUNON means “weaving” in Bengali.
All BUNON pieces are made in Kolkata, India.
The silk fabric is handcrafted from the cocoons of wild silkworms raised in the local forest;
the cocoons are spun by hand into thread, which is then hand-woven into fabric.
Made entirely by hand with methods that have remained unchanged for over 1,300 years,
one weaver can weave only about 3 meters of fabric in a single day.
Women spin the thread, and men weave the fabric
—a tradition that has remained unchanged since ancient times.
Spinning the thread by twisting it with the palms of their hands and thighs,
as softness of female skin is essential for this process.
Even in India, there are now very few places that still work with this traditional method.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to preserve this rare and time-consuming traditional craft.
By meeting with thesepeople, learning about their culture and circumstances,
deepening the mutual understanding, and sharing thoughts,
BUNON hopes to preserve this craft for future generations through the work.
Due to natural variations in temperature, humidity, and rainfall each year,
no two pieces are exactly the same.
There are pieces that can only be created at that specific moment
– that is one of the beauties of “Slow craft”.
